How to create an NFT wallet

Updated: Jan 26

The world of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) can be as confusing as their name (…for those who don’t know, NFTs are basically digital assets – some of our GoJoe challenges feature them and they unlock cool stuff like prizes and rewards).

NFTs live on the blockchain. If you want to create or receive an NFT, you’ll need to get yourself a digital wallet – traditional wallets store your cash and credit cards, digital ones hold your cryptocurrency and NFTs.

And just like in the real world there are loads of different types of wallets out there depending on your needs. One of the biggest digital wallets is called MetaMask and, in our opinion, it’s great for anyone starting out or interested in getting hold of NFTs.

Here’s step-by-step instructions on how to set up a MetaMask desktop wallet. It’s based on you using a Google Chrome browser extension – however, you can use other browsers such as Firefox, Brave and Edge.

  1. Go Only download MetaMask from the official MetaMask website.

  2. Click the “Download” button on the homepage.

  3. Click “Install MetaMask for Chrome”. You will be re-directed to the Google Chrome web store.

  4. Click “Add to Chrome” and add the extension. Following install, you’ll be able to view the MetaMask fox head icon in the top right hand corner of your browser by clicking on the puzzle icon.

  5. Click “Get Started” and “Create a Wallet”.

  6. Create and confirm a password according to MetaMask’s guideline – a minimum of 8 characters. Ensure that your password is unique and not used elsewhere. If you’re happy with the terms, agree to them and hit “Create".

  7. Once you’ve created your wallet, you’ll be able to view your seed phrase. This is a very important 12-word sequence that is used to recover and backup your wallet. Your seed phrase must be hidden and never shared with anyone. If it gets into the wrong hands your assets could be wiped out. Don’t take a picture or screenshot of it - instead, write it down on a piece of paper and put it in a top secret and safe location. Better still, write your seed phrase down on 3 pieces of paper and store each in a separate secure location. As an alternative, you could download the seed phrase and keep it offline on an encrypted hard drive.

  8. After documenting your seed phrase, click “Next”.

  9. Confirm your seed phrase by clicking on the correct words in the correct order of your 12-word sequence. Click “Confirm”.

  10. Click “All Done”.
